From Fresh to Forever: Drying Your Own Flowers Naturally

DIY flower drying tips from your local Melton florist

One thing I've learnt is florists never let a good flower go to waste. Every little bloom and sprig of greenery is too special to toss, which is why drying flowers is such a brilliant idea. It’s a simple, sustainable way to hold onto their beauty and make the most of every petal.

Some flowers are absolute stars when it comes to drying, and the best part is they can last for months, even years! Talk about getting your money's worth. They’re great for little DIY gifts, or stockpile them like I do to create beautiful Christmas wreaths and everlasting arrangements. Oh, and did I mention they look gorgeous hanging upside-down to dry? Instant rustic vibes for your home or workspace!

Want to try it? Follow these easy steps and you can't go wrong.

- Make sure you remove any excess leaves and foliage from the stems, if left on they can turn a bit mouldy and you definitely don't want that.

- Grab a rubber band to secure your bunches, stems shrink as they dry, so the band will keep everything together

- Hang them in a dry, airy spot with plenty of ventilation, the garage or a laundry is a great choice.

Best Flowers and Foliages to Dry

Some blooms dry better than others. Here are some favourites we love using at The Flowered Heart:

Flowers: Strawflower, statice, misty, sea holly, strawberry fields, or leucadendron.

Foliage: Spinning gum, umbrella fern, nandina, and tetra gum.

Drying flowers is fun, easy, and pretty satisfying. It’s a fab way to get even more out of your floral purchases, create something uniquely yours, and embrace a little eco-friendly floristry. Give it a go, the results are gorgeous, and you’ll be hooked in no time!
