The Truth About Supermarket Flowers (and Why It Matters)

The Truth About Supermarket Flowers (and Why It Matters)

What You Might Not Know About Supermarket Flowers

I’ve spoken about this before, but lately, the conversation keeps coming up and the weight of it feels heavier than usual. So I wanted to take a moment to share, gently, from my heart.

Here’s the truth: Supermarket flowers are having a real impact on florists like me.

I know while you're doing your weekly shopping and see a bunch that’s cheaper than mine, it's natural to wonder, why the difference? And I understand truly, from the outside, it can be hard to see why.

This might surprise you but many supermarkets sell flowers for less than I pay wholesale. The big chains can afford to do this but for me, it’s not sustainable, I can't match their prices. And it’s giving people the impression that florists are overcharging when really, we’re just trying to earn a living and share our love of flowers.

The flowers I use?
They come from local growers. I’m up before the sun, picking through each bunch by hand, still sleepy, still with bed hair, because finding you the best blooms really matters to me.

The truth about imported blooms (and why I don’t use them)

Supermarket flowers are mostly imported. They’ve been sitting in cold storage and travelled around the world, but worse still, every single one of those imported flowers are dipped in a chemical called glyphosate (yes, Roundup) before coming into the country to “devitalise” them. (You can read about that here) There are some serious health concerns around this, and I won’t work with them. I won’t bring them into my studio, and I definitely won’t pass them on to you.

It’s not about judgment, it’s about making informed choices

I want to be clear, I’m not judging anyone’s choices, I know we’re all doing our best.

But I do believe in making informed ones. And I think many people simply haven’t been told any of this. That’s why I’m sharing.

Because when you buy from a florist, you’re not just buying flowers.
You’re supporting years of training, early mornings, long days, and conscious decisions.

What you’re really paying for when you buy from me

You’re paying for premium, clean, Australian-grown blooms.
You’re paying for time, for conditioned flowers, for care, for the wrap, the ribbon, the hands that gently place each stem.

Just like you’d pay a trusted tradesperson for their time and skill, floristry is no different.

So next time you’re choosing flowers, I gently encourage you to pause and ask yourself.

Do I want something mass-produced, shipped and stored, dipped in chemicals that's been sitting neglected on a supermarket shelf?

Or do I want clean, fresh flowers grown right here and artfully created by a trained Florist who truly loves what they do?

A soft purple fresh flower bouquet featuring, Australian grown disbud chrysanthemum's, spray roses, snap dragons, stock, lisianthus and gum. A dreamy arrangement perfect for mother's day, birthdays or any celebration.

To me, it’s not even a choice.
And I hope, one day, it won’t be for you either.
